Hi there,
In this post I am going to tell you each of the signs that destiny sent us not to move to Portugal and all the misfortunes that happened to us since we moved to Porto.
I have already told you more or less in previous posts, but I wanted to make this list in which I will be adding future misfortunes. I hope there won’t be too many.
In March 2021 we went to Madeira motivated by the wonderful publicity about the island. We were going with the idea of living for several months and as a possible future residence, and in 4 days we were already completely disappointed.
We flew to Faro since, if we were to leave Portugal, we had to test Covid.
The tour of Portugal ended in Porto, where we spent a week in June to celebrate my birthday.
While in Porto, Diego’s eye turned red so, arriving in Valencia, we had to go to the emergency room. He had a piece of metal stuck in his eye.
That was the first sign that destiny gave us.
Since the end of the pandemic, the trips we made were to experience how people lived in those places since we were looking for a good country to emigrate to.
After 6 months of traveling around Latin America, we decided to return to Europe and start looking for houses in Porto since it was the city in Portugal that we liked the most.
An important factor for choosing Portugal was that we mistakenly believed that we were not going to pay taxes for 10 years.
We took a trip to Porto to look at houses in the summer of 2022.
The first afternoon in the city we watched a seagull kill a pigeon and eat it.
This was the second sign that fate gave us.
The next day, when we were in line to ask for the NIF for non-residents, a pigeon or a seagull crapped all over me. You cannot imagine the amount of excrement that fell on me.
This was the third sign that fate gave us.
From then on, when we decided to buy the house, we had to back out when the solicitor made a mistake for the third time in making the promise of sale contract.
What has come since that damn moment when we decided to buy that house has been nothing but misfortune:
- Diego fell in Parque Oriental a few days after buying the house and spent several weeks with a swollen foot. His big toe never flexed again.
- We found out that we had been scammed and that the house was illegal.
- Paulo Correia ripped us off with the bathroom renovation. That renovation is still giving us problems 2 years later.
- Another guy who was supposed to fix Paulo Correia’s mess did a worse job and stole our money.
- The solicitor João Valente, who is the first responsible for the illegal sale of the house, sued us to the justice of the peace for defamation and stole 1000 euros more from us thanks to a corrupt judge.
- Diego fell down the stairs in the house.
- Diego mistakenly kicked a box that was on the floor and broke his little finger.
- Diego was bitten by a dog when we went hiking.
- Nicolas Scavone, whom we had hired to do other works on the house, also ripped us off.
- Jaime Roriz’s lawyer, whom I had hired to sue those who swindled me in the sale of the house, made me lose a year and 1000 euros. In addition, I lost the complaint from the Justice of the Peace Court because she gave me bad advice.
- We tried to buy a used car at Rocha Automóveis and they scammed us. They stole 1000 euros from us.
- The architect who was supposed to do the legalization of the house swindled us. He stole 1230 euros from us.
- A bidet pipe broke, and it was 400 euros.
- After going to a surfing lesson, Diego got injured and was unable to train for 2 weeks.
Not to mention the many problems we had had and continue to have with the house.
