Hi there,
In today’s post I am going to tell you about the experience in the hotel where we stayed for two nights when we went to open the account in Porto before buying the house.
I had a contact at Activobank who was in the Arrábida Shopping, so we looked for a hotel in that area. The Mercure Hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia had enough availability for August, and it cost us 278 euros for 2 nights without breakfast.
We got a room on the first floor and the first thing I noticed was that the cleanliness was poor; in fact, there was pubic hair in the sink and on the bathroom floor.
I was feeling a little sick that afternoon, and since I didn’t feel like arguing, I didn’t say anything about the poor cleaning.
At eleven o’clock at night when we were sleeping, a man came and started knocking on the door trying to get into the room. I immediately called the front desk to have security sent over. The next morning, they explained to us that he was a hotel client who had changed rooms and that he had supposedly left behind some very important documents.
I took the opportunity to complain about the cleanliness and they offered us a room change.
The new room was on the 5th floor and this time it had been cleaned well. In addition, they had left us bathrobes, a plate of strawberries, a bottle of water and a little more amenities.

I detail the good and the bad:
Pros
- Silent.
- Well located near the Arrábida Shopping.
- Good attention from the reception staff. They took responsibility for the problems we had and went out of their way to improve the experience.
- Large TV.
- At the reception there was water and fruit for the guests.
- Good quality beds and pillows.
- Large bathroom.
- Amenities (coffee, tea, shampoo, soap, cream).
Cons
- Poor housekeeping.
- Wi-Fi never worked in either room.
- In the advertising of the hotel, it was stated that the rooms had views of the river and there are really no good views.
- Very small closet.
- No workspace.
- Very expensive for what the hotel was.
